Darrington Dare was the Librarian in the late 1800s and was the mortal enemy of Ambrose Gethic. In order to defeat Darrington, Gethic traveled into the future. Darrington followed him and, with the help of the current librarians, was finally able to defeat Gethic. Upon finding out there were multiple Librarians, Darrington warned Flynn of the danger of a Civil War between the Librarians which could tear the Library apart. He then traveled back to his own time. Dare's trip to the future gave him a new outlook on life which led him to reunite with his old friends. He was able to avoid the Serpent Brotherhood's assassination attempt on his 40th birthday because of his friends that stood by his side. He continued fighting until he retired from being the Librarian and died in 1950 at the age of 102.
- Arthur Conan Doyle based the character of Sherlock Holmes off of Darrington Dare.
