Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was a self-proclaimed holy man who worked his way into the inner circle of Tsar Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia. The Tsarevich (heir to the throne) Alexei suffered a hematoma and appeared to be on the brink of death. Rasputin's course of treatment, in the opinion of his mother the Tsarina Alexandra, pulled him back, earning the charismatic wandering monk a permanent place at court. He embroiled himself in the tumultuous politics of the day in Russia and survived a stabbing that was intended to kill him, although very little reliable, verifiable information on the man exists - most stories lean heavily on rumor and even legend. On December 30th, 1916, at the home of Prince Prince Felix Yusupov, Rasputin was given numerous doses of poison (in refreshments) but appeared unaffected, and was then shot in the chest. Believing him to be dead, the conspirators sought to return him to his home and stage the scene to seem as if there had been an attack there. However, the bullet wound had not proved fatal and Rasputin rose again to assault Yusupov who finally ended the monster's life with a killing shot in the courtyard. The body was then taken to the river and dumped.
