"Don't you know what I wished for? Don't you know what this house has made me? I'm death!"
—Katie Bender, "And the Heart of Darkness"

Katie Bender was the daughter of a family of serial killers known as the "Bloody Benders". She found the House of Refuge and used it to become immortal.[1]

Biography[]

Katie Bender was the teenage daughter in a family of serial killers known as the "Bloody Benders". They had killed at least a dozen people in Kansas and Nebraska in the late 1800s before their crimes were discovered. While they were on the run, they stumbled into the House of Refuge, a Mystery House that Katie soon realized could grant wishes.

After using the house's powers to become immortal, Katie forced it to help her kill more people, using its ability to magically relocate itself to move around the world and find victims. She made a game out of it, pretending to be a terrified girl on the run from something awful inside the house, then turning on those who got caught up in the trap and murdering them. Although the house tried to warn people and scare them away, it could not break free of Katie's willpower on its own.

In 2014, Katie and the house were in a forest in the Nitra Region of Slovakia, where she crossed paths with Eve Baird and the Librarians. She lured them in by claiming that someone in the house had taken her friends, while the house first tried to warn the Librarians off, then reached out to them for help. Katie particularly focused on Cassandra Cillian, whom she viewed as a weak link, as Eve tried to keep Cassandra out of the house and away from danger.

After tricking the team into looking for her "friends", really her victims, she appeared to lose track of where and when she was, telling Cassandra they needed to get to Texarkana, where there was a fort and soldiers, and then calling Cassandra "Jesse" and claiming they were in Nevada. As Cassandra tried to understand what was happening, she realized that Katie was the real killer, and tried to escape as Katie began to hunt her down.

However, Cassandra proved to be stronger than Katie expected, tapping into her own rage about her inescapable mortality to break the house free of Katie's influence. With Katie's connection to the house severed and her immortality gone, Cassandra killed her and freed the house from her corruption.[1]

Personality[]

Katie Bender was a manipulative psychopath, able to play the role of a scared, reckless teenage girl well enough to avoid any suspicion. When she decided that she was done with the acting, she dropped the mask quickly, revealing her true personality as a gleefully vicious killer. Despite having been at it for over a century, killing hundreds of people, she still took pleasure in both luring in her victims and seeing them realize that she's the real threat.

Katie could be coldly dismissive of anyone or anything she viewed as unworthy, including the House of Refuge itself, and her family, who didn't see the real potential of the House. She also had an excellent sense for weakness in others, although in the case of Cassandra, she didn't realize the true strength within.

It's unclear whether her apparent inability to remember where or when she was, or who she was with, was a real issue she's having or if it was just another way to unsettle her victims.

Abilities[]

Immortality/Invincibility: Due to the power of the House of Refuge, Katie Bender was immortal and invincible, unaging and incapable of being harmed. When her connection with the House was severed, she lost this ability and was able to be killed.

Manipulation: Katie Bender was a very good actor, capable of convincing everyone that she was a scared victim rather than a ruthless killer. She also recognized a rift between Cassandra and the rest of the team and exploited it to make Cassandra more vulnerable.

Quotes[]

  • "It's funny. I can never remember where the begging goes. Does the crying come first?"
  • "My family... We killed a lot of people. Some for the money... But mostly for the fun."
  • "My family never knew how special it was. Not one of them heard this house whispering. But I did. 'Do you need help, Katie?' 'Why yes, magic house, I surely do.'"
  • "You think I don't know this house hates me? Think it doesn't try this every time? Tries to warn people? I made a wish, and it has to give me what I asked for.. Every time, 'til I'm done. You know what's so funny? I'll never be done."

Trivia[]

  • Katie Bender is based on the real life serial killer Kate Bender, whose family were the actual Bloody Benders. They killed at least ten people in Kansas in the late 1800s, then vanished when their crimes were discovered.[2]
  • The real Kate Bender was in her early 20s during her family's killing spree, while Katie appears to be in her late teens.
  • Katie's shift from playing a scared but charming girl to being a gleeful psychopath was inspired by the fact that the real Kate Bender was known to use her charm to lure in victims.[3]
  • Katie's eyes turning white when her true nature is revealed was a choice made by director John Harrison.[3]
  • According to writer Geoffrey Thorne, Katie views the whole thing as "a big game".[3]
  • Using Lea Zawada rather than a more well-known actor allowed the writers more flexibility with the character, as the audience had no real expectations for her going into the episode.[3]
