The Mystery Houses are magical buildings that are the basis of all stories and legends of haunted houses.[1]
History[]
The Mystery Houses are listed in the Heisserer Index. According to Jenkins, the legends of haunted houses--from the haunted house on the hill to the sorority house stalked by a psychopath--are all based on these houses. He does note that there is some argument about the methodology used to identify the houses.[1]
Known Mystery Houses[]
Their are currently four active mystery houses, and one inactive one:
- The Dionaea House
- The House of Refuge (also known as the Shatterbox)
- The Soul Cage
- The Ur Adobe
- The Final Rest (inactive; destroyed in 1350)[1]
Trivia[]
- The Dionaea House is from the multimedia novel written by Eric Heisserer, whose name was used for the Heisserer Index.
- The Final Rest may be a reference to Imladris, aka Rivendell, aka The Last Homely House, from Tolkien's Middle-Earth.
- The idea of a prototypical haunted house was a combination of the Dionaea House stories and "that one house" in the neighbourhood that local children find creepy.
