The Philosopher's Stone was the main goal of the Alchemists, the ancestors of modern Chemistry. It was thought to grant immortality, as well as turn all metals into gold. The name "Nicholas Flamel" also comes up, a noted alchemist and the creator of the Stone in the Harry Potter canon.
